Seetha Eliya Srilanka- where Ravan kept Seetha hostage
Visiting Seetha Amman Kovil in Seetha Eliya was not in our
original plan when I was planing our Srilanka trip. On one of the day my mother asked
are we not visiting the place where Ravana had held Seetha captive. I did some
check on the google and found out that the place is about 7 kms from Nuwara
Eliya and would come on our way. Thus we could stopover for a while at Seetha
Eliya (town)’s Seetha Amman Kovil, also known as Ashoka Vatika. This post
shares the pictures and details.
Seetha Amman Kovil is a small temple dedicated to Seetha,
Hanuman and other related gods. The location is of historical significance-
this is where Ravana held Seetha captive after kidnaping her from Ram’s home in
India during Vana-vasa. Today the location is represented by a small temple.
The temple is situated between the main road and a stream of
water. A small statue depicting Ram and Sita is also situated across the
stream. I was expecting a much bigger garden/campus. May be it was large, now
reduced to small one- we don’t know.
Be aware of monkeys when you visit Seetha Amman
Temple/Ashoka vatika.
You can stop at Seetha Amman temple if you’re heading to
Horton Plains from Nuwara Eliya.
