Animal Rescue Centre, Saligrama
Feb 2024 Update: This post was written 13 years ago and is being read by those searching for animal rescue centers around Udupi. I am appraised of some negative feedback about the animal rescue center run by Sudheendra Aithal- allegations include pet animals given for care taking going missing, that dogs and cats are fed to snakes or other animals and commercialization (breeding and selling animals).
I sense there is some level of commercialization as he has animals to feed but I am unable to verify other allegations. No one has evidence either.
I am told multiple complaints were made to Menaka Gandhi's office, Udupi district DC office and state Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services dept. Officials from Captain's Animal trust Manipal raided this place and rescued 36 puppies. You may please do some due diligence and use your discretion.

Sudheendra Aithal is an animal lover and runs a small rescue centre at his house in Saligrama, a town on NH17 (now NH66) in Udupi District, Karnataka.
He's been running this centre since several years and is a known person in locality for any animal related issues. His house is located close to Saligrama Gurunarasimha temple and those visiting temple usually visit his house to see the animals being treated there.
Below: Sudheendra Aithal shows us a tortoise which was caught by fishermen in their nets- one of its legs is cut off by the fishing net and it is blind- he says. Mr. Aithal feeds it with fish everyday to keep it alive.
Currently his rescue centre houses few horses, wild buffaloes, monkeys, cats, dogs, birds, a Persian cat and so on
The Persian cat gives a stare as I try to make it pose for pictureSudheendra Aithal once had an issue with law enforcement agencies- as he was taking care of wild animals at his house which is illegal, forest department officials had once confiscated animals. Eventually he got appropriate permit and now all's well. People willingly donate to him as he doesn't ask for money.
Do pay his centre a visit if you love animals and if you're passing through Saligrama town on NH17 (now NH66)

ReplyDeleteYou'll have to visit and ask. Don't think he has a fixed rate card or into selling commercially. You may get to adopt for free from various online communities where cats are put up for adoption.
