An observation on Speed Governors- English translation at the bottom
English version
I was travelling in a private bus in coastal Karnataka (Mangalore Udupi Kundapura line). Though luxurious and offer prompt service these buses are known for their over speeding. As usual the driver of the bus I was travelling was in full josh and was speeding the bus at very high speed competing with another bus ahead. While passengers inside were praying god for safety, other road users of narrow NH 17 were jumping off the road to save themselves. I happened to notice a sticker on the windshield of the bus which said “Micro Autotech- 60kmph Road speed limiter”.
I asked the driver- Do you really have a speed governor installed? How can you drive so fast... The driver replied that speed governor is indeed fixed to his vehicle but that doesn’t work. He further said “If we go at high speed other road users will get scared and drive at slower speeds in fear of their life-that’s how we are governing the speed and purpose of speed governor is being achieved.”

That driver is irresponsible and a danger to other road users.
ReplyDeleteComplain to the bus service administration immediately.
Well Hari,
ReplyDeletethis is a well known menace in the region... Almost all drivers are rash and localites are used to it and voluntarily give space to the buses... The only difference was that this bus had a speed limiter sticker...
Once a while some drivers are reprimanded by police but that doesn't seem to be effective enough...
I almost travel daily in these buses.
ReplyDeleteMy Observations:
Reason for overspeed
1.The truth is that they are not paid for going fast but they are
asked to pay fines if they are slow.
Let me explain:
The buses have a schedule which is
set by the Canara Bus Association.
According to which there are time keepers at Udupi, Brahmavar, Kota, Kundapur(Udupi-Kundapura). So they are required to reach at stipulated times.
If they are late then are not allowed to board passengers.
But these schedules are very old.
Now the amount of traffic is increased but the road is still the same.
They have to cover Udupi-Kundapura in nearly 48 mins. Mind thats not child's play considering the amount of traffic.
Now if they dont have a good collection any day the owners will cut some amount of their salary.
2. Coastal people just talk about it when the issue is raised. I have seen many people boarding buses which drive faster. I can assure that they are least bothered.
....will be continued.
Rythm...
ReplyDeleteThat's so well said...I fully agree
he should be thinking he is the governor for maintaining others speed :))
ReplyDeletespeed governer! :))
Yes, that's exactly the new definition I was referring to
ReplyDeleteYes I am back to continue where I let(Rhythm aka Manoj)
ReplyDelete3. Its not that only buses overspeed. The avg speed on these roads is >65kmph. If u cant reach you are considered inelligible and you have to give way by letting other vehicles pass.
4. A thing to be proud of...
Lorry drivers during interviews are asked about experience. If they are from Udupi-Kundapura they are recruited very fast. They consider these roads more tougher than F1.
A joke on road
Once a scooter driver while driving down a slope comes near a cyclist. The cyclist shows his righthand to coney his intentions about moving right. After some time he makes some more signs with his hand. the scooter rider doesnt understand these. He moves left thinking the cyclist will go the right. But the cyclist moves left and they collide. The scooter driver asks an explaination. So the cyclist says that the second signal was to cancel the first one.

Now some solutions according to me:
1. Better roads:
2. Better lane system.
3. Better driving by educated people(I stress on it).
4. Speed governers(may be but a little more study should go into it)
Thats all i can get now.
Finally let us also(techies)drive properly without confusing others atleast!!!
Manoj, Well said
ReplyDeleteRoads they are converting into 4 lane ones... though it may take few more years to get it extend till Kundapura and beyond..
Current roads are indeed tougher than F1... Michel Shoemaker wont be able to beat our drivers..
